S&P 500 atlas: who is in the index, where, and since when
Every current constituent of the S&P 500, placed by GICS sector, headquarters and the date it entered the index. Two filters drive all seven views at once.
01
When each company joined, against when it was founded
Each dot is one constituent. Highlighted dots match the filters. Companies far above the diagonal band joined soon after founding; those far below waited decades.

About the data
- Source
- The public S&P 500 constituent list (company, GICS sector, headquarters, date added, year founded) as maintained on Wikipedia and mirrored by the public
datasets/s-and-p-500-companiesproject. Retrieved October 2026. - Founding year
- Where the source lists several years (mergers, spin-offs), the first one listed is used.
- Headquarters
- Companies domiciled outside the US are grouped by country. One constituent has no headquarters listed in the source and is left off the map.
- Scope
- Current constituents only. Companies that joined and later left the index do not appear, so earlier decades look thinner than they were.
